Common Nouns in English
Have you ever thought about the words we use for everything around us? We use words like "table," "dog," and "city" all the time. These are called common nouns. They are the most basic words in our language.
What is a Common Noun?
A common noun is a general name for a person, a place, or a thing.
Common nouns do not name a specific person or place. They just name the type of thing you are talking about.
Example: If you say "boy," that is a common noun because it refers to any boy in the world. But if you say "John," that is his name, so it is a proper noun.
Common Nouns vs. Proper Nouns
The easiest way to understand common nouns is to compare them with proper nouns.
Proper nouns name specific people, places, or things and always start with a capital letter. Common nouns do not start with a capital letter (unless they begin a sentence).
The Four Types of Common Nouns
Common nouns cover almost everything we see or think about. Here are the four main groups:
- People: Words for roles or family members (like child, man, woman, teacher.
- Places: Words for locations (like city, town, village, school).
- Things: Words for objects you can touch (like book, table, chair, car).
- Ideas: Words for things you cannot touch (like love, hope, fear, freedom).
